Step-by-step guide to logging an unknown fish species.

When making an observation in the eOceans app, you might not know the specific fish species you’re observing. Follow the steps below to log as a general fish species, then ask our experts for help with your ID.

If you haven’t already, download the app and create an account.

You will need to confirm your email in order to activate your account.

Once you are logged into the mobile app—

Navigate the the plus button at the bottom of the screen to start your observation.

  1. A new screen will open, you can start by taking a photo of the fish species you’re observing.

  2. Navigate to the plus button next to “Species”, it will prompt you to search for the species you’re looking for. See below.

  3. Check the “ID me please” box to get help with your unknown species identification.

Searching for “fish”—

Once you have opened your observation and taken a picture of the fish species you’re trying to ID. You can click the “+” button next to “species”.

  1. A search bar will open, prompting you to search for the species you’re trying to ID. Search “Bony fishes” and select the only option that shows up. The scientific name will be Osteichthyes.

  2. After selecting “Bony fishes” as your species, you will be able to use the “+” button to add the number of individuals you saw of the same species.

**If you observed multiple unknown fish species, add the number of individuals you observed and then make note of how many of each different species in the notes section of the observation.

Once you have inputed all the details for your observation, go ahead and save it using the button on the bottom of the screen. Since you selected the “ID me please” box, our experts will review your observation and help you with your species identification.
